"Poisonous" does not mean deadly. Some manifestations of toxicity are subtle. The dose, as always, determines if a plant is safe source of nutrients or a toxic hazard.

BRIEF: Could you tell me if these landscaping plants are poisonous horses?

QUESTION:
I would appreciate it if you could help me with a question I have regarding toxic plants to horses. We are in the process of completing our landscaping and have been careful of the plant species planted thusfar. However, we did plant one red oak far away. I am very aware of oleanders and yews being quite toxic to horses. We were considering planting Lantana on the opposite side of our property from the horses, but don't want to risk if there is a potential problem. We also have dogs that could access the Lantana. My quesiton is, does Lantana Montevidensis(lavender lantana) have the same toxic risks and properties as the Lantana camara(yellow sage)? Do all of the verbena plants or plants from the Family Verbenaceae pose this risk? They grow so well where we live and bloom well, but do not want to risk it if there is a problem.

ANSWER:

I wouldn't worry about the oak. I am not sure about the Lantana Montevidensis, but I will check. Not all of the Family Verbenaceae pose this risk.
