BRIEF: Can crown vetch be harmful to horses?

QUESTION:
I have planted crown vetch on a hill next to a horse pasture, it is spreading rapidly. Do I need to worry about it getting into the fenced area where the horses are?

ANSWER:

While crown vetch doesn't do much to cows, it can poison horses if they eat a lot of it. If it comes into the pasture, mow that bit to keep it in check and chances are between that and a little subclinical grazing by the horses and it will not gain much of a foothold.
