QUESTION:
I would like some advice regarding FA analysis of feeds.

ANSWER:

We have been using the method of Browse, et al. 1986 (I am not kidding about the name, appropriate, eh?), in which 30mg of dried ground sample (2mm mesh) is added to 1ml of 1N methanolic HCl and heated (after a good N2 purge) at 80 C for an hour in a teflon-capped 5ml vial. After cooling. 1ml hexane and 1 ml physiological saline were added and the mixture shaken and centrifuged to break the phases. The GC/MS sample was drawn from the hexane (upper layer).
