Frequently (and not so frequently) Asked Questions
BRIEF: Can fescue grow in Florida?
QUESTION:
We live in Florida and recently had a mare give birth to a weak foal that only
lived about 30 hours. The vet said that the mare had suffered from premature
placenta separation. He said she appeared to be perfectly healthy and her
colostrom was tested and found to be
excellent.
I have heard that fescue can cause this problem. Can fescue grow in
Florida?
ANSWER:
Fescue can grow in Florida and weak foals can be the result of many factors,
including plant
poisons. Extreme hot weather is another contributing factor.
